Throw Away Your Razor & Support DU's Beards for Conservation
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Oct. 31, 2013 – It’s no surprise that waterfowl hunters enjoy growing out their beards during season for various reasons. If that description fits, then Ducks Unlimited has a program just for you: Beards for Conservation.
The Beards for Conservation app is available on the App Store and Google Play for iPhone and Android devices.
Since Beards for Conservation launched on Oct. 1, more than 6,300 people have signed up to participate, uploading more than 13,000 photos of their beards, whether real or fake. In addition, the program has gone viral on Facebook, where Beards for Conservation profile pages have been shared more than 100,000 times.
“We know a lot of duck hunters take great pride in growing their beards during this time of the year,” said DU Web Director Anthony Jones. “The Beards for Conservation program is meant to take advantage of that excitement – especially among our Facebook audience of more than 756,000 fans. Our main goal was to create a unique and engaging experience that helps raise awareness of our conservation mission and encourage new memberships. It’s certainly been exciting to watch the program take off so quickly.”
To participate, users must select one of DU's top five conservation priority areas to help raise awareness of our important work. Once logged in, take a photo each day to show the world how much your beard has grown.
The Beards for Conservation app also allows participants to vote for their favorite person’s beard. The program runs until Jan. 31, 2014, and DU will be awarding prizes to participants based on a variety of factors. Everyone who joins Ducks Unlimited through the program will also receive a new Buck Gardner duck call as a free gift, while supplies last.
The Beards for Conservation app is available on the App Store and Google Play for iPhone and Android devices, as well as on DU’s website at www.ducks.org/beards.
