Turkeys live in a constant state of fear and are, by and large, the most paranoid birds to ever exist, but not without good reason. To fool a spring gobbler into shooting range in the coming weeks won’t be easy if you don’t do your homework, because turkey hunting success is all too often found in pre-season scouting. So, this week on The Revolution with Jim and Trav presented by Outdoor Channel, Sportsman Channel, World Fishing Network and MyOutdoorTV, we’re running on ‘Turkey Time’ and have compiled the ultimate spring turkey hunting show that’s chock-full of tips and advice. Phoning in for a special in-depth two-part interview will be Matt Morrett of Avian-X TV, plus Steve West from The Adventure Series and Jordan Summitt producer of Buck Commander and Commander Life.
Matt Morrett is a turkey calling boss and the host of Avian-X TV on Sportsman Channel. He is a five-time World Friction Champion, seven-time U.S. Open Turkey Calling Champion and holds a Grand National Championship, as well. Mastering their language is a crucial part of closing the deal on a gobbler, but Matt says that the use of decoys can be invaluable, too. He’ll join Jim and Trav on The Revolution to talk about effectively using decoys for more success. Matt will dish on the Avian-X line of turkey decoys and what makes them appear so life-like and how they replicate the body posture of real turkeys. He’ll discuss what decoy(s) you should use, where you should position your decoys to bring gobblers within range and more. He’ll also talk about how to close the deal. “The more you call, the more excited you get him when he’s out of range. Go silent and let the decoys work. Lay off, let curiosity get to him and be patient.”
Jordan Summitt is part of the Commander family as the producer of Buck Commander and Commander Life on Outdoor Channel. As a passionate turkey hunter, it’s fitting that he is also involved in Strut Commander, a line that caters specifically to turkey hunters. Jordan says that Strut Commander has designed mouth calls, pot calls and box calls that are not only effective, but they are also affordable. Tune in as Jordan talks about some of the key steps for success for spring gobblers. Scouting is a crucial part of the equation when turkey hunting. Jordan says that his season doesn’t open for another 3 weeks, but that isn’t stopping him from getting out and scouting in preparation. He’ll talk locator calls, the use of choke tubes, patterning your shotgun as well as his quest for a single season slam with a 20-gauge this year.
Steve West is the host of The Adventure Series on Outdoor Channel. In October of 2016, Steve embarked on a woodland caribou hunt in Newfoundland not knowing the outcome of the hunt would make him the new world record holder for woodland caribou using a muzzleloader. You can watch the footage of the record breaking hunt on Saturday, March 25th at 7:30 p.m. ET on Outdoor Channel. Steve joins Jim and Trav on The Revolution with a look at the history of the woodland caribou and how robust populations and over-foraging nearly led to this animal’s demise. He’ll then fast forward to the present where conservation efforts led by hunters and the local government have brought back this herd and ultimately given him the opportunity to harvest the new world-record bull measured at 330 1/8” B&C. Don’t miss this great story!
