Ugly Stik Gets a Facelift
Classic rod is reborn with advances, but still priced economically

The old expression “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” is generally accepted as good advice. However, there are some great things that have the potential to become even greater with improvement.
At this year’s ICAST Show in Las Vegas, Shakespeare introduced the Ugly Stik GX2, its latest rod and reel combo. Featuring Ugly Tech Construction, Ugly Tuff guides and the original Ugly Stik Clear Tipdesign, the Ugly Stik GX2 is an improved version of the original Ugly Stick freshwater rod.
Since 1976, novice and skilled anglers have trusted the durability and sensitivity of Shakespeare’s Ugly Stik. They are great versatile rods and economically priced. Revamping the legendary rod was a risky move, but Shakespeare achieved success with its next generation Ugly Stik. The new Ugly Stik will be available in stores September 2013.
Ugly Stik GX2
Last weekend, my son and I took the Ugly Stik GX2 spinning rod and reel combo for a test drive at the lake for some catch-and-release.
Like many 5-year-olds, my son loves to go fishing. He calls himself an “expert fisherman”, because he always manages to catch something, even when I don’t.
When I showed him the new combo, his eyes lit up and he insisted on using the “awesome grown up” fishing pole. We agreed to take turns, trading back and forth between the Ugly Stik GX2 and his blue and yellow Batman fishing pole.
Ugly Tech Construction
The Ugly Stik GX2 is constructed with a combination of graphite and fiberglass, which produces a rod that is sensitive and has better balance, without forfeiting strength. Its new blank through reel seat design enhances the rod’s overall sensitivity and gives it a more lightweight feel.
Just like the original, the new Ugly Stik is strong, durable, and easy to use. In my opinion, if the rod can withstand being banged and dragged around by a 5-year-old, it’s virtually indestructible.
Ugly Tuff Guides
The Ugly Stik guides have been completely remodeled. Thanks to the new Ugly Tuff one-piece guides, you no longer have to worry about losing ceramic guide inserts. Each Ugly Tuff guide is made of a single piece of stainless steel to prevent inserts from popping out.
Ugly Stik GX2 features one piece stainless steel guides.
New Look with Ugly Stik Clear Tip Design
Attractively designed, the new Ugly Stik has a sleek and modern appearance. The rod is matte black with red and silver accents. An EVA foam grip provides a comfortable handhold for hours of fishing. The Ugly Stik logo is etched into the EVA grip to complete the new look. It also features the same legendary clear tip as the original Ugly Stik, which gives the rod its added strength and sensitivity.
So whether you are a skilled angler, or a beginner, be sure to check out Shakespeare’s new Ugly Stik GX2 this September. If you don’t believe me, trust an “expert fisherman,” Shakespeare’s new Ugly Stik GX2 is definitely an “awesome grown up” rod and reel combo.
