Making Friends for 20 Years

What better way to kick off an explosive third season of Friends of NRA than visiting the dedicated volunteers who started it all. Matt and Jessie head to Columbia, Missouri to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the wildly successful fundraising program and reflect on the reasons it thrives today. Then, at the NRA Annual Meetings, the hosts meet up with top volunteers and reward them with a turkey hunt.

Country Cook-Off

In preparation for a cooking competition, Matt and Jessie meet up with a world-class chef deep in the Appalachian Mountains. When Jessie heads home to prep for a match, Matt continues on, visiting with show sponsor Legacy Quest Outdoors in North Carolina and a top volunteer in Tennessee. Jessie meets back up with Matt in Alabama where they put their cooking skills to the test at a wild game cook-off.

South American Send-off

Friends of NRA goes international as Matt and Jessie travel to South America. The adventure begins in Argentina where they experience the thrill of a 3 day Dove hunt and take in the sights and sounds of Buenos Aires. Then it’s off to Brazil and a tour of the headquarters of Taurus International; a proud sponsor of Friends of NRA. Jessie leads a demonstration of the new Taurus pistol which she helped design. To end their whirlwind trip, Matt and Jessie are treated to an evening of Brazilian traditions, which includes plenty of food and Gaucho dancing.

Triggering Competition

Matt and Jessie travel to the Bluegrass State so Jessie can compete in the 1st Annual Benelli Tactical Shotgun Championship. Their first stop, however, is at the Owensboro Rifle and Pistol Club where they check in with the local 4H shooting team and engage in a friendly air rifle shooting match. Then it’s off to the Rock Castle Shooting Center where Jessie aims to win in her first all shotgun championship while Matt has some fun in the sun on the golf course.

This ain't our first rodeo

Trading their ball caps for cowboy hats, Matt and Jessie venture to the NRA and Weatherby sponsored National High School Finals Rodeo in Rock Springs, WY. Here they take in the rodeo and spend time with the high school kids who are competing for college scholarships and championship belt buckles. In between events, they mosey over to the Sweet Water Trap Club to cheer on the students competing in the National Trap Shoot Finals and check out the NRA Trap Shooting Family Day.

Trekking the Oregon Trail

Friends of NRA’s hard working committee members welcome Matt and Jessie in style with a dune buggy tour of the beaches of Coos Bay. Then Jessie heads to the Redmond Rod and Gun Club where she meets volunteers and participants in the hugely popular Women on Target event.  After a rafting adventure down the Deschutes River, Jessie and Matt visit the NRA’s Youth Outdoor Adventure Program and watch as the kids participate in a pheasant hunt.

A Patriot Through and Through

With Jessie away at a competition, Matt heads to New England, first stopping at Old Sturbridge Village where he learns about 19th century firearms and attends a Friends of NRA banquet. His next stop is at the University of Vermont where he meets the shooting teams who wouldn’t be able to compete without help from the NRA. Matt’s tour ends with a visit to a local Women on Target event.

Epic Elk

Looking for a hunting adventure, Matt and Jessie travel to the NRA’s Whittington Center in New Mexico. An outdoor enthusiast’s heaven, the center boosts an array of ranges, training classes as well as plenty of land to hunt on. Matt and Jessie take full advantage of this hunting paradise and take home two more trophies for the wall.

Big Adventures on the Big Island

Matt and Jessie dig out their shorts and say Aloha to Hawaii. They begin with a visit to a Youth “Guts” Match and check in with the hardworking volunteers. Next up, a sheep hunt followed by a tour of a local coffee farm whose owner is a generous Friends of NRA donor.  No Hawaiian trip is complete without a deep sea fishing excursion during the day and a luau at night and Matt and Jessie take full advantage of the local attractions.

Season: 2012

Sound of Many Shotguns and Country Vibes in Vegas

The second season of Friends of NRA kicks off with hosts Matt and Jessie exploring the other side of “Sin City.” They visit a local gunsmith to highlight two active Friends of NRA volunteers and watch grants at work benefitting a Navy Junior ROTC program at a local high school.  In between meeting hard-working volunteers, Matt and Jessie shoot with members of NRA Country and hit the strip to take in the rest of what Las Vegas has to offer.

Meeting of the Minds

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, marks the location of this year’s NRA Convention where Matt and Jessie experience the hubbub of supporters getting together for the Second Amendment. They meet up with Heritage Society members who look to support the Second Amendment for years to come and a competition sets in on the sporting clays range. Heading back to the convention, Matt and Jessie join in the festivities at The NRA Foundation Banquet where they auction off a signed NRA Country guitar to the highest bidder.

Remembering and Recognizing

Continuing their way east, Matt and Jessie make a stop in central Pennsylvania to visit the ballpark where Matt spent a season pitching in the minors. When they get to New York City, emotions fall over the two hosts as world events hit close to home just short of the 10-year anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11 and they speak with firefighters on the ground on that historic day. Jessie leaves to practice for the Bianchi Cup, so Matt continues on to a shooting range in New Jersey to see how the youth are benefitting from NRA Foundation grants.

Volunteers in the Volunteer State

Touching down in the aptly titled, “Volunteer State,” Matt and Jessie visit Arlington High School’s clay shooting team who holds the 2011 national championship title. Music and food culture are the focus of Memphis and Nashville as the hosts discover blues and country roots throughout the state.  Knowing you can never be too prepared, Matt and Jessie take part in a fighting rifle course offered by two Friends of NRA volunteers, and then visit the home of Barrett Firearms to test American made firepower.

Welcome to the Wild, Wild West

NRA events are buzzing in South Dakota, when the Regional Volunteer of the Year invites Matt out for SportsFest to celebrate shooting sports for the youth, and takes him out for a day of fishing on the Missouri River. Heavy firepower is put to the test in the rolling prairies where Matt doesn’t have to be a marksman to get annihilating results. Jessie meets up with Matt in Rapid City where they take in a Wild West shootout on Main Street.

Boys and Their Toys

When the girls are away, the boys will play when Matt heads up to Wisconsin solo to get a view of what the Friends of NRA are doing for youth shooting sports with a Boy Scouts of America camp in the northern part of the state. Then the mud flies as the Crandon International Raceway is inundated with off-road racers, excited for their first visit from the Friends of NRA. Matt then heads outside of Green Bay to attempt to get some geese on the ground with a dedicated volunteer.

Puttin' it to the Test

Getting his hands on some new firearms, Matt heads out to central Wyoming to pursue an antelope and visits with three generations of the Weatherby family about their connection with the NRA and the legacy they’ve left on shooting sports. Another entity keeping the show running is also visited as Matt goes on a tour of the Brunton Outdoor facility. Regional Volunteers of the Year from 2010 take Matt on a tour of a range directly benefitting from NRA Foundation grants.

First Time in the Last State

Palm trees and sandy beaches await the Friends of NRA as Matt sets down in Hawaii to learn about what residents are doing to keep their gun rights in one of the harshest states on gun laws. Committed volunteers show Matt around, taking him to a local range and to a Friends of NRA banquet on a Marine Corps base. A long hike up in the mountains puts Matt on a hunt for mouflon sheep, while a boat ride to the sea sets him trolling for marlin.

Going Back to Cali

Back on the mainland, Jessie meets up with Matt as they explore Friends of NRA volunteers establishing pheasant hunts for wheelchair bound hunters as well as getting the youth into shooting sports for the first time. The show turns to conservation as Matt and Jessie go out hunting for feral hogs in central California.

Left My Heart In Texas

Wrapping up a whirlwind season, Matt invites Jessie down to his family’s ranch in Texas to see if Jessie can put a whitetail down with a pistol. On hand are the hosts' inspirations to become NRA Members, their fathers, who are still active volunteers, helping out a local high school shotgun shooting team who have competed all over the United States.
