Taxidermy captures eyes, imagination at Dallas Safari Club expo

Art of the Hunt
At the Dallas Safari Club convention, visitors can walk 360 degrees around some of the displays. This sable and lion are entangled in a life or death struggle. The other side is just as impressive. (Kevin Jarnagin photo)

DALLAS — This ain’t your great-grandpa’s old cotton-and-plaster stuffed deer head. Today’s taxidermy is high art.

And there’s no finer gallery than the Dallas Safari Club convention and expo. The Jan. 9-12, 2014, event features world-class taxidermy exhibits showcasing game species from Africa to Alaska.

Every taxidermist strives for realism and detailed expression of creativity — even up close.
